César Orrico
Numen
With the exhibition Numen, the Ornamental Cast Iron Museum is presenting works by the internationally emerging Spanish sculptor César Orrico for the first time in Germany. Twenty bronze sculptures of various sizes enter into dialogue with the objects in the permanent exhibition of the museum, bringing to life how mythical imagery continues to influence our thinking today.
César Orrico, born in Logroño in 1984, combines the tradition of classical sculpture with a contemporary formal language. The central theme of the artist's work is the human body. Designed with great anatomical precision, his works present themselves in intense movement or sensual tension. At the same time, the works radiate a calm and meditative power, particularly through their facial expressions, which has an emotional and almost mystical effect.
Orrico also conveys this tension in his selection and combination of materials: bronze, wood and marble support different demands on physicality, expression and movement.
"I am fascinated by the rites and customs of ancient cultures
and the connections between societies from different eras." César Orrico
The exhibition shows a selection of his works in bronze, in which the artist deals with mythical motifs, archaic rituals and natural phenomena. He understands mythology not as something of the past, but as a living part of our present-day patterns of thought and imagination. Orrico repeatedly draws on references to antiquity, thus building a bridge between the past and the present.
César Orrico, a highly regarded artist in Spain, has gained increasing international recognition in recent years and has received numerous awards. Among other honours, he was awarded the prestigious Queen Sofía Art Prize in Madrid.
